Why Livingstone?
Known as Zambia’s Tourist Capital, Livingstone is one of Africa’s most captivating destinations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, cultural heritage, adventure, and warm hospitality.
Originally known as the Old Drift, Livingstone owes its existence largely to the world-renowned Victoria Falls. The settlement was established as a staging point across the mighty Zambezi River and was later named after David Livingstone, the Scottish explorer who became the first European to see, name, and publicise the Falls in 1855.
His historic journey helped introduce Central Africa to the wider world and paved the way for future exploration, missionary work, and trade in the region. Founded in 1905 at a safe distance from the river’s flood-prone banks, Livingstone quickly grew in importance.
In 1907, it became the capital of Northern-Western Rhodesia, and in 1911, the capital of Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. Although the national capital was moved to Lusaka in 1935, Livingstone retained its status as Zambia’s premier tourism destination and continues to preserve much of its historic colonial architecture and character.
Today, Livingstone is a vibrant city where history and modernity coexist. Many of its early twentieth-century buildings remain in use, offering visitors a glimpse into Zambia’s past. As one of the country’s earliest urban centres and the historic gateway to the north, Livingstone remains rich in stories, culture, and heritage.

The 12th Zambia Health Research Conference 2026 is to be hosted at the Avani Victoria Falls Resort in Livingstone, Zambia’s premier tourist destination. Renowned for its world-class facilities and close proximity to the iconic Victoria Falls, the venue provides an exceptional setting for scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Visas
Visa requirements for entering Zambia depend on the traveller’s nationality. Some delegates may enter Zambia without a visa, while others may be eligible for a Visa on Arrival or may need to obtain a visa before travelling.
Delegates are encouraged to verify the applicable requirements with the Zambia Department of Immigration before making travel arrangements.
To qualify for a Visa on Arrival, you must have:
- At least six months’ validity remaining on your passport from the date of entry
- At least three blank pages in your passport
- A copy of your return air ticket (to be shown at passport control)

Flight Tickets
If you have an e-ticket, keep a printed hard copy with your passport while travelling. Arrive at the airport 2 hours before international flights and 30–60 minutes before domestic flights.
Travel Insurance
Delegates travelling from outside Zambia are strongly encouraged to obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuation, and trip interruption for the full duration of their stay.

By Air
The nearest airport is Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI), only 10–15 minutes from the city centre and the Avani Victoria Falls Resort.

GETTING AROUND
Taxis & Ride-hailing
Taxis and hotel shuttles are the most convenient options. Reliable ride-hailing apps operating in Zambia include Ulendo and Yango (download from Google Play or App Store).
Important: Do not enter a taxi if other passengers are already inside.
Hotel Shuttles
Many hotels (including Avani) offer daily transfer services to the conference venue. Please confirm with your hotel when booking.
Car Rentals
Self-drive and chauffeur-driven options are available at the airport and in town. Popular companies include Europcar, Avis and local operators. Driving is on the left side of the road. Legal driving age is 18.
Walking
If staying near the city centre, many restaurants, shops and smaller attractions are within walking distance.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Power Supply
Zambia uses 230 V / 50 Hz. The common plug types are Type G (British) and Type D. Bring a universal travel adapter.
Mobile & Internet
The three main networks are Airtel, MTN and Zamtel. SIM cards are inexpensive but require registration (passport/ID + photo). You can buy SIMs at the airport, in town, or at the conference venue.
The conference venue will provide free Wi-Fi. For personal data, prepaid SIMs or portable MiFi devices are readily available from MTN, Airtel, Liquid or Zamtel.
Currency & Banking
The local currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). Major credit/debit cards (Visa & Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops. Cash is useful for taxis, markets and smaller establishments.
ATMs are available at the airport, banks and shopping centres (they dispense Kwacha only). International cards usually attract a withdrawal fee. Notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid card blocks.
Currency exchange is available at the airport and licensed bureaux de change. You will need your passport.
Bank hours: typically 08:15 – 14:30, Monday to Friday. Most banks are closed on weekends.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Healthcare at the Conference
Basic health services and an ambulance (provided by the Ministry of Health) will be available at the venue during conference hours. Private hospitals and clinics are available in Livingstone for more advanced care. Ensure your health insurance covers you in Zambia.
Vaccinations & Malaria
Consult your doctor or travel clinic well in advance. Malaria is present in Zambia — malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Bring any regular prescription medication you need (ideally with a copy of the prescription).
Yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your country of origin or transit — please check current requirements.
Pharmacies are generally open Monday to Saturday; very few open on Sundays.
